Rabat, Morocco

In a landmark move to honour the enduring spirit of national unity, King Mohammed VI has officially declared October 31 as “Unity Day,” a new national holiday that will be celebrated annually across the Kingdom of Morocco. The announcement, issued by the Royal Court, recognizes the historical transformation of the Moroccan Desert and its pivotal role in strengthening the country’s territorial and national cohesion.

The Royal statement emphasized that this decision reflects Morocco’s unwavering commitment to unity from the northern cities to the southern provinces, especially in light of the sacrifices and development efforts that have shaped the Moroccan Desert into a symbol of resilience and patriotism.

*International Support for Unity Day*

The declaration has garnered praise beyond Morocco’s borders. Wilson Lalengke, Chairman of the Indonesian Citizen Journalists Association (PPWI), expressed strong support for the initiative, calling it “a visionary step toward reinforcing the bonds of solidarity among all Moroccans.”

“I fully support His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s decision to establish Unity Day,” Lalengke stated, from Jakarta, Thursday (06/11/2025). “This celebration will not only honour the historical and cultural significance of the Moroccan Desert but also serve as a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from unity. From Tangier to Laayoune, this day will help make Moroccan unity more real, more visible, and more enduring.”

Lalengke, known for his advocacy on global human rights and press freedom, added that such symbolic gestures play a vital role in fostering national pride and collective identity, especially in regions that have faced historical challenges. This Indonesian figure was also known to have attended the 80th session of the UN Fourth Committee to deliver a speech defending the human rights of the Sahrawi people in the Tindout refugee camps on October 8, 2025.

“I hope that the declaration from the King of Morocco will bring a breath of fresh air to the refugees after returning to their homes in the Moroccan Sahara region and joining their brothers and sisters in the northern region,” he added.

*A Day of Reflection and Celebration*

Unity Day is expected to be marked by cultural events, educational programs, and public ceremonies that highlight Morocco’s diverse heritage and the shared values that bind its people. Schools and institutions will be encouraged to engage in activities that promote dialogue, historical awareness, and national solidarity.

As Morocco continues to assert its territorial integrity and invest in regional development, Unity Day stands as a testament to the country’s forward-looking vision and its dedication to building a cohesive future for all citizens. (PERSISMA/Red)
